Face Masks: Now Becoming an Accessory for COVID-19
Face masks are usually used by doctors, surgeons, and specialists to contain the transmission of bacteria from one person to another. It was not widely used until the year 2020. In December of 2019, Wuhan, a city in China, experienced the pneumonic flu spreading to the people, which was later reported to WHO (World Health Organization).
This virus was spreading across the whole of China and now overseas and neighboring countries who were facing similar symptoms. This virus came up to be called as the Corona Virus or COVID-19. It was caused because of eating an infected bat which was contagious and spreading like forest fires. Common signs of infection from the coronavirus include fever, coughing, and breathing difficulties. In severe cases, it can cause pneumonia, multiple organ failure, and even death in critical cases.
The incubation period of COVID-19 is thought to be between one and 14 days. It is contagious before symptoms appear, which is why so many people get infected. The infected patients can be also asymptomatic, meaning they do not display any symptoms despite having the virus in their systems. Now the virus has been spread across the globe and there is no such vaccine been discovered for the virus.
Although the death rate of the virus is as low as about 3% but once infected, it gives lots of trouble to your system. So far there are about 9.94 million positive cases with almost 497,000 deaths worldwide. The recovery rate is more than 50% with a count of about 5.01 million people recovered. Though this is not much of a deadly virus but there is a need for prevention from the infectious virus immediately.
Now with the outbreak of COVID-19, face masks are now mandatory for every human being. The virus is contagious, meaning that it can spread from one person to another indirect. So face masks are necessary to protect oneself from getting in direct contact with another person. Wearing a mask will protect an individual from exposure to droplets sneezed or coughed out by an infected person. Masks also protect a person from directly touching their nose or mouth in a subtle way. You can buy a face mask at medical shops and healthcare clinics.
The study found that while large droplets coming from the mouth were trapped by the mask, smaller ones get transported to much shorter distances, less than 30 cm, as compared to about 2 m in the absence of a mask. Virus particles stay suspended within 1.5 m of the person, but this suspended concentration falls off sharply after that distance.
Airborne transmission from infected persons could be greatly reduced by wearing a simple cotton mask and maintaining a strict physical distancing of two meters. Before the coronavirus pandemic, the production of face masks was not in much requirement but after the pandemic, the production of masks has skyrocketed and at a stage even stocked out at some places.
The doctors, nurses, and surgeons used clinical masks before COVID-19, but now they use the N95 masks which are better respirators and preventing infection from surroundings. Sanitizers are another crucial items that help killing the germs and virus which were also produced in huge bulks after this outbreak.
Even when the face masks are stocked out, some people manufacture face masks at home. They build face masks with the help of good-quality cloth and elastic strips. Home-made face masks are cheap, efficient are reusable, which is a good option if the face masks are stocked out.
The Government and ministries across the world have made it mandatory to wear face masks whenever they step out from their homes and use the least contact with other individuals. There was a complete lockdown phase for several countries in which nobody should come out from their homes for about 3 months.
Corona Virus has been spreading unanimously all over the world. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
Masks should be worn for the safety of oneself as well as the community to prevent the spreading. Wearing masks also makes us feel safer rather than stepping out of the home without a mask. Dispose of the worn-out and damp masks after decent usage of the face mask and replace it with a new face mask. Do not touch the center region of the mask while disposing of.
Wash your hands with soap and water before and after wearing a mask. The risk of getting infected is very high since there is no such vaccine discovered and the COVID-19 virus can only be avoided by keeping your hands clean with a sanitizer, wearing face masks mandatorily, and social distancing.
If universally face masks are being worn by every individual, the chances of spreading or getting in contact with the infected are greatly reduced. Since there are no such vaccines discovered, the face masks will now be a daily accessory for every individual while stepping out of their homes. There is no such need to get panic or worried about this virus if we follow the precautionary measures and wear face masks at all times.
Wearing a face mask does not make you 100% safe from the COVID-19, but it keeps you as well as others safe from the spreading at some extent.
